Chuck Pavlich, Terra Nova Nurseries on the new Artemisia 'Makana' Silver

"US: "We were sold out within hours"

"The day that we sent out our first internet sneak peek, we were sold out within hours", says Chuck Pavlich, Director of New Product Development at Terra Nova Nurseries. He does not seem to be the only one that is very content with their latest introduction; Artemisia 'Makana' Silver

Artemisia 'Makana' Silver
Artemisia 'Makana' is a selection made at Terra Nova Nurseries from the species mauienesis, native to the island of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands and is one of the few annual varieties of Artemisia in cultivation.

Unlike the regular Artemisia, this novelty has no strong odor, grows vigorously without getting "rangy" and seems to "play nice" with most other annuals. "The silver color is the perfect foil for both pastel and brightly colored annuals. The dense, feather-like silver foliage gives containers and borders both "Filler and Thriller" attributes in one plant. A 'Makana' has a superb natural habit, but also lends itself to topiary and annual hedges."

Artemisia Makana™ Silver. In the Hawaiian language, Makana means gift or reward.

Growing the Artemisia 'Makana'
Next to it's multiple uses and striking appearance of which Pavlich is certain that it will catch the eye of the consumer in the shops, this Artemisia 'Makana' seems to have several benefits for the grower as well. "It is easy to root and with just one pinch while young, it grows into a marvelous specimen easily and carefree. The silver foliage is naturally insect resistant and when establish, withstands drought and heat very well. It is hardy to USDA zone 9-11."

High demand
Not only Pavlich is fond of this new variety, the growers seem to be also. "It is going to be a big hit. The day that we sent out our first internet sneak peek, we sold out within hours, sold out! Orders are flying in and I'm confident in our ability to supply for the future. It truly is a lovely and novel plant."
