Australia: NGIA honours industry contributions

On 22 February 2018, at the Industry Dinner held at MONA, the Museum of Old & New Art, NGIA recognised outstanding contributions to Industry by three exceptional industry identities.

Life Membership is the highest honour awarded by Nursery & Garden Industry Australia and, is conferred on any person who has rendered distinguished and meritorious service to the nursery industry. In accordance with the resolution passed at the annual general meeting in November 2017, Gary Eyles of AT Eyles & Son in NSW was awarded Life Membership.

Gary's contribution is recognised as extending across State and Territory borders and is acknowledged as contributing to the welfare of the industry as a whole. He is a third-generation nurseryman, with a life time of achievement in the industry and a proven track record, volunteering countless hours to support and better the industry. He is held in the highest esteem, his counsel well respected and often sought after. A true professional in every sense, he has been referred to as one of the gentleman of the industry.

The Nursery & Garden Industry Australia Award of Honour recognised Hamish Mitchell of Speciality Trees in Victoria, for his outstanding service to the industry throughout Australia and whose contribution is of outstanding benefit to the whole industry. Hamish is well qualified in this regard having devoted an amazing amount of time, energy and passion to the industry.

Finally, the Award of Merit recognised Anthony Kachenko of Hort Innovation for his outstanding service to the Australian nursery industry in the area of support to the industry in research and market development. Having proven himself time and time again as an unwavering advocate for the industry, the recipient has worked tirelessly to improve outcomes for growers at both the on farm and broad industry levels.
