Uganda: Dümmen Orange grows chrysanthemum mother stock with IPM

Two years of hard work have finally paid off: Dümmen Orange is now growing its entire mother stock at its Chrysanthemum location in Uganda with Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The IPM concept is called GreenGuard. It is particularly challenging to use with mother plants, as producing vital, uniform cuttings calls for completely healthy starting material. Furthermore, imports of cuttings are governed by strict phytosanitary guidelines in many countries.

But Dümmen Orange can’t yet do away entirely with chemicals in GreenGuard production. They still have to treat Chrysanthemums against white rust, for example. However, nowadays they only use products that are safe for insects and are compatible with biological crop protection.

Organised trade and other bulk buyers are always on the lookout for sustainably produced plants, and consumer interest in them is growing as well. And as Dümmen Orange have switched their entire production to the GreenGuard standard, the Chrysanthemum production is still consistent as before.
