Kenya: FlowerWatch to provide training program in Naivasha

FlowerWatch Kenya, a company specialized in monitoring and ensuring the quality and vase life of cut flowers during transport, designed a series of training modules both on-farm and at a central location.

Over the coming months, FlowerWatch will provide a series of trainings in Naivasha, Kenya. These include:

MODULE 1: COLD CHAIN MANAGEMENT
Contents:
• Insight to flower respiration and the theory behind it.
• The temperature fluctuation throughout the supply chain.
• Your quality and value of flowers in relation to temperature.
• Calculating your value gain or loss through the concept of degree hours.
• This will all be further emphasized through practical experiments showing the effect of temperature.

MODULE 2: POST-HARVEST TECHNOLOGY
Contents:
• Understand water relations, water quality and hygiene through the post-harvest process and its implications.
• Discuss various post-harvest additives that will strengthen your vase life guarantees.
• Hands on discussion on hygiene, water uptake, colour dying and treatments to leaf yellowing

MODULE 3: PACKAGING
Contents:
• Selecting a box design that can enhance efficient cooling and maintain flower quality
• Discuss: pack rate, sleeves, sleeving and its implications.
• Compare Kenya's packaging to competitors in the market such as South America and the Netherlands
• Practical demonstration to show ways of preventing condensation, reduce respiration.

MODULE 4: CUT FLOWER HANDLING

Contents:
• Damages and entry points of Botrytis Petal plucking
• Field to cold store (time vs water uptake)
• Storage and handling in the cold store
• Grading
• Bunching
