Pieter Lips on cut Phalaenopsis from Ichtus Flowers

"NL: "There is still a huge market open to us"

Ichtus Flowers in Waddinxveen (NL) is one of the market leaders when it comes to cut Phalaenopsis. Pieter Lips, co-owner since 2010, explains why this cut flower is a real must-have in every flower shop.

Walking through the greenhouse, Pieter explains: "These Phalaenopsis plants have been specially bred for cut flower cultivation. In a round of 36 weeks, the flowers have just about gone through the entire company, this is called: propagation with an average temperature. Everything that the plant needs to form leaves, branches, buds and finally the most beautiful flowers."

Precisely for smaller flower arrangements
Where Phalaenopsis as a plant decorates many living rooms, the butterfly orchid as cut flower is mainly used as a luxury product in the event sector or the wedding season. While more and more cut varieties are coming on the market, specially bred for use in smaller flower arrangements such as bouquets. Florists can therefore distinguish themselves with this cut flower. Pieter: "There is still a huge market open to us at the ordinary florist, but it is difficult to reach this group well."

Ichtus is 'Preferred Supplier' at FleuraMetz. In their own words, the trader is the ideal party to do business with, because the assortment is large and inspiration and knowledge can be shared well.

Smart, saving tip: buy made to measure
More contact with FleuraMetz customers also means more customization. Marco Hooijmeijer, purchaser at FleuraMetz: ''Whether it concerns the most heavy branches or just the flowers, Ichtus Flowers can deliver specifically.'' Pieter confirms this. ''Preferably you would want to know what an arranger is going to make with your product. Sometimes we send the most beautiful and long branches. Subsequently we see online photos passing by: the branches are completely cut to pieces! It breaks your heart. Besides, it is not smart, for the customer it is much more costly compared with ordering only per flower!"
