New Zealand: Myrtle rust found in Porirua

Porirua City Council admits it was only a "matter of time" before the deadly tree fungus myrtle rust was found.

The council confirmed its presence on a row of ramarama shrubs on Parumoana St, opposite the Pak 'N Save supermarket, on Friday afternoon.

Council staff plan to remove the infected bushes on Wednesday, taking care to sterilise and wash their clothing to prevent further spreading, with the infected area eventually being returned to grass.
