Netherlands: Growing Kordana potroses for over 20 years

After being a Saint Paulia grower for 5 years, Leo van der Harg was searching for another product to grow. In 1997 he met Kordes and decided to start the cultivation of Kordana potroses in a part of his greenhouse. After a very successful first year, Leo van der Harg decided to focus on the cultivation of potroses and stopped the cultivation of Saint Paulias.

Business went very well and 5 years later, in 2002, Leo van der Harg moved to a new location, where he built a new greenhouse fully equipped for the cultivation of Kordana potroses. After a few expansions the area of the company now covers 3.6 hectares, in which he produces roughly 5 million Kordana potroses a year. Sustainability is very important for Leo van der Harg, the company uses of 500 solar panels, LED lightning and a new technique which retards the potroses mechanically, therefore less chemicals have to be used. In the propagation area of the greenhouse only biological control is used.

Also leftovers of the cutting material of the potroses are used to feed the animals of the Zoo of Rotterdam.

Growing Kordana assortment
Leo van der Harg has always grown Kordana potroses in a 10.5 cm pot. The decision to grow only in one pot size makes it possible to be very efficient in producing potroses. The assortment of Leo van der Harg exists of Rosa Kordana Classic and Rosa Kordana Grande.

Besides the 10.5 cm pot, Leo van der Harg offers 21 cm bowls as well. The bowls are made of 3 A1 quality potroses, which are planted together when they are flowering. Doing this, they can also offer ‘Carnaval’ bowls with 3 different varieties in it.

After a few years of growing potroses Leo van der Harg noticed an increasing demand by his customers for more big headed roses. In cooperation with Kordes, they developed the Rosa Kordana Grande assortment. Especially in spring and summer there is a high demand for big headed varieties.

During the years many of the old varieties have been replaced by new ones with a better quality, bigger heads and a longer shelf life. The newest addition to the assortment of Leo van der Harg will be Rosa Kordana Grande Firebird.
