Dutch tulip production to surpass 2 billion this year

Recent data from the trade association KAVB shows that the production of tulips in the Netherlands will surpass the 2 billion mark this year. Last year production came to 1.9 billion cut tulips with an export value of 250 million euros. Next to that there are also the tulip bulbs sold for use in gardens and parks.

Dutch tulips find their way to florists, supermarkets and specialty stores worldwide. Tulips have significantly increased in popularity in recent years due to the increased quality, uniformity, the expanded range and their durable character. Nowadays tulips are mainly grown in water instead of soil, without the use of chemicals. Compared to other flowers the energy consumption is low and decreases every year.

Gerard de Wit’s tulip company Germaco is one of the largest in the Netherlands and works with a completely closed water system, thus leading in Dutch horticulture.
