NL: Fachjan expands with 1.2 ha greenhouse

Fachjan has bought an additional 1.2 ha greenhouse (on 2.3 ha of land) in Naaldwijk, the Netherlands. Business is good and the company is growing nicely. This led to an increasing lack of space at the establishment in Honselersdijk, which they say was harming its appearance; the company is basically a showroom.

Lately, the green plant segment has been growing considerably. A couple of difficult years decimated the market and it has been especially challenging in the segment 'big'. Fachjan director Fred Janssen: "Big green plants were no longer being sold in garden centers but now that’s slowly beginning to pick up again. And there’s money for large special projects again. During the difficult years, not only did some growers stop, those who went on started cultivating smaller plants."

Fachjan specializes in all types of green plants, large and small, whereby automation is difficult. "If a product is too large, then we look at something else. Since we have more and more plants, we were getting hemmed in. In addition, we don’t want to have too many plants around that will take a while to get sold. So the new location is intended primarily for those plants that require a longer cultivation period."

The greenhouse is being acquired from Kwekerij Mosterd, a company that grew plants here and also has vegetables in two other locations. Since they are halting the first activity they decided to sell the greenhouse. "The greenhouse isn’t new but does have a concrete floor, screens and all other required amenities. Especially the concrete floor was important to us and the reason to go for this rather than another greenhouse."
