California Spring Trials: Fragrant flowers and mixes are hot trends

Fragrance, mixes, pollinator friendliness, and millennials. These are some topics that often come to the table at the California Spring Trials, that is in full swing at the moment. During this event, that took off last Saturday April 1 and will last till Thursday April 6, breeders, growers and suppliers are showcasing their new and existing products at various locations throughout California.

Trends
At the Spring trials, a broad range of varieties are being showcased. Even though every breeder has their own novelties and varieties, one can notice some general trends. These trends are the 'talk of the town' and the fragrant flowers are one of them. Not only for the cut roses, scent is becoming important, it is too for the balcony, bedding and potted plants. Cyclamen with a scent, have you seen, or smelled better before? At Varinova's trial location at Headstart Nursery they have some on display, the so-called Rocolina series. But also at Proven Winners, they have a fragrant landscape rose named At Last, on display, and at HMA Plant the Nemesia French.

Due to the extinction of bees, many breeders invest a lot of time and effort in developing and introducing pollinator friendly varieties. These plants attract more bees and it really seems to become a trend in the US. The Lavender sales, for example, seem to do quite well. And many breeders come up with new color combinations of foliage and flower.

"It works great in combinations." This is an often heard quote at the Trials. Mixing several plant varieties in one container is, just like in Europe, very popular. Breeders are increasingly more often supplying pre-made cutting mixes, seed combinations or options of cuttings and seeds that can grow well together.

And this latter trend in particular relates to the Millennials, an often raised subject. It is the target group of many growers, and therefore important for breeders too. "How can we meet their needs?" is one of the main questions and offering "convenience" seems to be part of the answer. Of course, breeders are always looking for new habits and colors, but the breeding process takes several years. So, in order to meet the needs of this target group in another way, breeders and growers started to offer more "ready to use products", like these mixes. And it seems to turn out to be a good decision. Now, even this 'not-so-green-thumb' target group can create a colorful garden, container or basket.
