"Dutch bulbs gain serious ground in Southeast Asia"
Bonnet's Dutch company has been active in Thailand for quite a while now. They set up an advanced trial and demonstration center in Thailand to showcase the latest varieties and developments. "We sell dry bulbs to retailers, wholesalers, consumers and landscapers. It is an interesting market that grows every year."
The joint booth of New Fashion Flowers, Van den Bos Flowerbulbs and Van der Laan Tulips at the 2017 Horti Asia in Bangkok last month.
"Especially with lilies and calla lilies", added Bart Duijvesteijn of Van den Bos Flowerbulbs. "These plants thrive very well in the tropical climate of Southeast Asia, they are used to this. Tulips are also wanted, but they perform better during a milder spring."
Van den Bos found an ideal distribution partner in the Thai company of New Fashion Flowers. "They are serving a market that is too small for us. Nonetheless, their market is increasing by the year, as Asian countries and consumers are increasingly interested in planting large quantities of colorful bulbs in their public gardens, parks and backyards', said Duijvesteijn.
The two companies were happy with the special interest they received for their products during the Horti Asia. "Bangkok is the perfect business hub and gateway to other countries in Southeast Asia. From here we meet our contacts and develop growing markets like Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Korea, China and Sri Lanka. The future for the bulb is looking bright here."
