Juan Demian Requena, Continental Breeding on Superstition:

"This rose has it all, including the color of the year"

Each variety of rose is special, despite carrying the genetic heritage of others and emerging from intricate crossbreeding; in the end, each is a unique creation. However, what makes a variety stand out? In this article, Juan Damian Requena of Continental Breeding explains what aspects a rose needs to stand out and presents their new rose variety Superstition®. According to Damian Requena, this variety does not only surpass all expectations, its color palette also aligns with the 2024 trend (Peach Fuzz) according to Pantone.

Breeding a rose that stands out
When attention is drawn to a particular variety, it is because it distinguishes itself from the myriad others through a harmonious blend of qualities, Damian Requena explains. "Every aspect is vital; from its early stages, it should evoke a distinct sensation in those fortunate enough to witness its nascent beauty. This allure makes it worth the investment, bearing in mind that each investment represents years of labor and financial commitment. Subsequently, during the cultivation phase, meticulous observation becomes paramount. The variety must meet agricultural standards, being both productive and resilient, with desirable characteristics such as good length, an optimal button size, and phytosanitary resistance, ensuring profitability in the end."

An integral, albeit often underestimated, aspect of this process is marketing, he continues. "Varieties must be categorized based on color, opening patterns, or other traits that make them appealing to specific markets. This is where individuals involved in the industry carefully assess the flower's unfolding. They scrutinize every detail before promoting it and presenting it to the final consumer."

Superstition - A variety that surpasses all expectations
The pinnacle is reached when a variety is found that surpasses all expectations, and according to Damian Requena, that variety is Superstition. "Its potential is evident from the beginning; a vigorous start, rapid growth, and easy basal shoot production contribute to its productivity (1.2-1.3 flowers/plant/month). With long, straight stems (50 cm-80 cm/stem) and an elongated bud (6.0-7.0 cm) in Ecuador, the fully developed flower exhibits a striking contrast between the stem color, foliage, and the blossoming pink hue with orange undertones. This color palette aligns with the 2024 trend (Peach Fuzz) according to Pantone; a perfect and timely combination. In a vase, it exudes beauty and delicacy, standing out among its peers."

"Deciding to introduce a variety to the market involves a thorough consideration of all these aspects. Today, we proudly introduce a variety that fulfills every criterion – get to know it, and let yourself be captivated by its charm."
