Schoneveld Breeding introduces its first gerbera variety

"It will revive the gerbera market"

Schoneveld Breeding is adding a new product to their assortment, a gebera named Joybera. They started breeding this pot plant five years ago and are now ready to bring it to the market. "A game-changer", according to Area Manager South Europe Gianfranco de Leo. At Myplant & Garden, which took place last week, he presented it for the first time, and at FlowerTrials in June, it will be launched officially.

Special about this gerbera is that it produces three or four flowers in the first shot. "Usually, the plants only make one or two flowers in the first shot." On top of that, the plants are extremely uniform in size of the plant and flowering time, he continues. "Other characteristics are that all flowers have a dark center, resulting in a nice contrast with the flower color."

de Leo is very pleased with the results so far. "We did a lot of trials in many parts of the world with different climates and daylengths and everywhere, the performances were very good."

According to him, this new gerbera assortment will revive the gerbera market. "Nowadays, we often see that gerberas are on the market for low prices because the quality is not that good. This new gerbera range is expected to increase the value of the plants. We see that they make more branches, that all flowers are together, that the leaves are not that long, and therefore fewer problems with insects and diseases. And as they produce a minimum of three flowers in the first shot, they are more attractive on the shelf."

Currently, the gerbera range of Schoneveld Breeding consists of eight colors and will be on the market in 2025. In the meantime, the breeding team of Schoneveld continues breeding and developing and are currently working on bicolored and double-flowered varieties.
