Christy Heckathorn, owner of Fleurish Flower Farm in Elk Point, was named the 2023 South Dakota Specialty Crop Producer of the Year. The public votes on who they would like to see as the recipient of this award.
"It's really nice to just be recognized for our hard work," Heckathorn said. "I know a lot of people work hard and are never recognized in that way for it, but it was nice to just have a little recognition for that. During the summer, the farm hosts two U-Pick flower-picking events every week, bringing a lot of community members out to the farm.
"I think one of the best things about having the farm is knowing that we are able to make an impact, whether it's the education side of things, kind of being open about how we grow and what we do, or just having them be able to come here and experience the farm, enjoy the flowers, and get away from the city and kind of experience some country life," Heckathorn said.
The farm is already preparing for the next upcoming flower season.
