Isabel Trillas Gay shortlisted for EU award for Asperello T34 Biocontrol

Biobest is pleased to congratulate Professor Isabel Trillas Gay, co-founder of Biocontrol Technologies, one of 12 outstanding women entrepreneurs shortlisted for the 2017 EU Prize for Women Innovators. She received the accolade in recognition of her work discovering and developing a biopesticide based on the natural organism Trichoderma asperellum strain T34 (Asperello T34 Biocontrol).

This prestigious annual award recognises EU women entrepreneurs that have brought their breakthrough ideas to market.

Professor of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Barcelona, Isabel Trillas Gay is a partner, member of the direction committee and scientific adviser to spin-off Biocontrol Technologies – awarded a Seal of Excellence in 2016 under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme for SMEs.

Marketed by Biobest as Asperello T34 Biocontrol, this breakthrough new biofungicide has multiple modes of action. It colonises plant roots to form a protective barrier against pathogens to support healthy root growth; triggers plants’ natural defense mechanisms and actively parasitizes and kills plant pathogens. It offers outstanding biological protection against root diseases such as Pythium and Fusarium.

Recently showcased on Biobest’s stand at IPM Essen, Asperello T34 Biocontrol is newly registered in France, Belgium and the Netherlands to control Fusarium oxysporum in several ornamental crops and to control Pythium in tomato, sweet pepper and aubergine crops. In the US it is on the market since 2015 to control soilborne diseases in ornamentals.

The winners of the 2017 EU Prize for Women Innovators were announced at a ceremony in the European Parliament, in Brussels, on 8 March - International Women's Day.
