New biodegradable pot made of sunflower husk fiber

A new biodegradable plant pot made from an "ok compost home" Vincotte certified raw material is launched. At the IPM in Essen Ralf Ostkotte, the manager of Osko GmbH introduced the Golden Compound “Erdtopf”, which is a flowerpot made of sunflower husk fiber. "We receive the sunflower husk as a waste product from the industry and mill it to a desired level of fibers for use for our materials", explains Reinhard Trumme of Golden Compound.

No plastic waste anymore
According to Reinhard Trumme the Erdtopf differs from other biodegradable pots. "The other ones are only industrial biodegradable like PLA, with composting temperatures from about 50 °C. The material those products are made of doesn't compost in soil and is not home-compostable like in a garden composter."

Reinhard sees a lot of benefits of Golden Compound's new product. "There is no plastic waste anymore, which is a big advance for the image of the grower. The plant is growing in a home compostable pot and doesn't need to be transplanted before delivery. The composting of the pot does not take a long time."

Positive reactions
At the IPM in Essen, that took place last month, the flower pot gained a lot of positive reactions. "Many customers know that there must be something done against plastic waste. Especially gardeners who are selling bio products," says Trumme. "Visitors were surprised that the pots are working in the machines of the growers just like a normal plastic pot and that the pot is undamaged in culture."

Ambition
"We are working to be able to offer more standard sizes for bigger and smaller plants." Golden Compound produces 10 million pots a year. "We will increase capacity in an short time as demand increases."
