Turkey: Local municipality in Ankara grows its own flowers and plants

The ornamental plants and flowers grown in the greenhouses in the Altinpark district of Ankara by the municipality are not only used in city parks and gardens around the city but also sold to the Ankara citizens at a low price.

The greenhouses are built in 1991 to grow flowers and plants to be used in some landscaping projects of the city but in time its production has grown more and more and now these flowers and plants are basically used all around the city, bringing a vibrant color to the whole area.

Greenhouse General Manager Orhan Kaya: "There is also a high-demand on our products from our citizens. Last year we reached an all-time high number for us with 400,000 seasonal plants. This year our goal is again to reach this figure."

The growing process of these plants start with seeds being planted first. After a while, these seeds are transferred into pots and following the fertilization and irrigation process, the plants are ready to be used in the city parks and gardens. After they are planted here, maintenance crews of the municipality handle the care of these plants, making sure they remain in good condition.

The greenhouse staff members underline that they are growing plants that are the most compatible with the climate conditions of Ankara and that viola and primrose are the most suitable varieties to plant in spring time in Ankara. The greenhouse employees also inform people and visiting students about handling and care of these plants.
