Terra Nova introduces Penstemon Dakota varieties

Terra Nova Nurseries announced a sneak peek of Penstemon Dakota Burgundy ('TNPENDB') PPAF PVR. The new variety is a more compact perennial than Penstemon ‘Dark Towers’ and Penstemon ‘Mystica.’ It is a tough plant with an extended lifespan.

Penstemon Dakota Burgundy has glossy, purple-black leaves and lavender-to-violet flowers in June, which are loved by hummingbirds. After bloom time, Penstemon Dakota Burgundy produces showy, dark seed heads that make for great cut flowers in the fall.

U.S.D.A. Hardiness Zones for Penstemon Dakota Burgundy are 3-8, with a bloom time of July through August. The variety’s mature height is 12”, with a width of 18”, and a flower height of 24”.

Penstemon Dakota Verde
Also new is the Penstemon Dakota Verde ('TNPENDV') PPAF PVR. This tough, hardy perennial has a green leaf form, and it blooms during the heat of July and August.

Penstemon Dakota Verde has fresh, glossy leaves on a short and compact plant throughout summer. It begins to show lavender-to-violet flowers in June, rather than pink. The plant shows off dark seed heads and foliage tinted dark purple during autumn.

U.S.D.A. Hardiness Zones for Penstemon Dakota Verde are three to eight, and it offers the ability for full sun exposure. The variety’s mature plant height is 12”, with a width of 18”, and an extended flower height of 24”.

Special uses allow the new variety to be a multi-purpose garden plant in the Deep South. Penstemon Dakota Verde is deer-resistant and a pollinator attractor. Landscape applications include mixed beds, borders and even steep banks. The grower finish time to a 4” pot is fast at four to six weeks.
