ElectroMecaniQue:

Local Vineland motor shop benefits from growth in Canadian greenhouse industry

The growth of the Canadian greenhouse industry is good for all sorts of businesses. Also for small businesses like the electric motor shop of Daniel Gagnon in Vineland, Ontario. "The greenhouse industry has brought us much work, it is our bread and butter."

Gagnon is the owner of ElectroMecaniQue, a small local business with an electric motor shop where he and his 4 full time employees repair electrical greenhouse components like drive motors, gearboxes and pumps.

Bread and butter

Daniel Gagnon is the head of the company since 2000, when he took over the company from Dutch immigrant Gary Fousert, who started the business as Gary's Electric Motor Shop in 1978. From the beginning the company served many flower greenhouses in the area. "Today, the greenhouse industry is still our main business, it is our bread and butter."

Over the last decade the Southern Ontario greenhouse landscape saw some changes and nowadays it is not only just the local flower businesses in the Niagara peninsula who greatly depend on the service of ElectroMecaniQue.

"We serve an increasing amount of vegetable growers too, from the Niagara area, but we receive calls from the Leamington and Kingsville area too. We also receive inquiries from B.C. and Alberta and have carried out repairs for greenhouse growers in Ottawa as well."

To service these growers, Gagnon and his employees do not leave their shop. Growers either come by to bring their broken motors, gear boxes and fans or they ship them to ElectroMecaniQue. As well as this the company carries out service for greenhouse builders and contractors.

Growth in local industry

Gagnon said that the greenhouse business is a good industry to work in. This has to do with the many new greenhouses that are built to serve the growing demand for locally grown produce and flowers. "Since I took over the company we have grown every year. Especially the last three years have been very good for our sales, which is fantastic."

Central inflation blowers

For this reason, ElectroMecaniQue is now expanding their supplies with the addition of greenhouse inflators from Fasco. Gagnon explained that more and more greenhouse builders are heading towards or thinking about central inflator systems, and therefore his company is now offering a selection of several sizes and types of blowers.

Fasco Central Inflation Blowers

"Central inflation makes more sense, because one large motor is more efficient and a lot more economical. As a result of this trend we offer a selection of Fasco greenhouse inflators in 4 sizes from 1/2 to 2 horsepower, or 1000CFM up to 3300CFM, with 2 more sizes in between. We sell them directly from the manufacturer, which allows us to sell them to greenhouse manufacturers and contractors with a substantial discount."
