ETFE film with hydrophilic coating for improved light transmission and less drops

“We’ve improved our ETFE film with a hydrophilic coating on the inner surface. The result is unrestricted light transmission, which accelerates plant growth, and the prevention of water droplets ensures immaculate plants and crop products without burn marks”, says Alexander Hoellmueller, Sales Manager Design with Hueck Folien. Their new Nowogreen product was launched at the Fruit Logistica.

Alexander explains the coating prevents drops from forming on the film surface due to high humidity in the greenhouse. “The rising condensation forms a film of water over the entire surface of the highly transparent, hard-wearing coating, which can flow off the sides in a controlled manner thanks to the design. This also prevents the film from fogging up.”

According to Alexander, the coating offers high chemical resistance. “Any residues of fertilizers or pesticides in the air have no impact on the coating.” The self-cleaning properties and the anti-drop coating result in unrestricted light transmission. “Thanks to the enhanced light transmission, it enables perfect conditions for improved plant growth.”

The ETFE film, which can be fully recycled, is available in clear and diffuse, with the clear film ensuring highest possible light transmission at all angles of incidence, and the diffuse option scattering the light evenly and ensuring no shadow casting in the greenhouse.

“Compared to glass, ETFE largely inhibits heat radiation, which allows lower energy costs. And since it’s much lighter, it also enables lightweight greenhouse construction.”

Nowogreen has a thickness of 100 µm and a width of 1,600 µm. The elongation at break is 450%, and the tensile strength is 50 MPa. “This means decade-long durability,” Alexander clarifies, “and the highest weather resistance - even against hail (class 3) and strong UV radiation. We’ve seen our films withstand extreme weather conditions like high UV radiation, hail, and also long periods of heat or cold. The hail protection prevents contamination caused by shards.”
