Large project to produce flowers and apples in Morocco

A UAE holding has announced the launch of a huge agricultural project in the Moroccan city of Azrou for the production of luxury apple varieties and flowers, with an initial investment totalling 156 million AED (about 39.02 million Euro).

The group, which has participated in the International Forum for Agriculture held in Meknes, said that the project would be implemented on a total of 1,060 hectares in mountainous areas and will feature small farms and various facilities. The development of the plan for the flowers project started last month. The greenhouses will be assembled in June and the first harvest is expected in October and November this year.

The project will be implemented in three stages. The first one will include 200 hectares for apple farms and 10 hectares for flower cultivation. When the project is completed, there will be a total of 712,320 apple trees, including Gala (213,696 trees), Red Delicious (213,696 trees) Fuji (71,232 trees) and some exclusive varieties, such as the Envy and Pink Lady (71,232 trees).

According to the marketing plan, most of the production will be exported to Europe and the Middle East, while the Fuji and Golden Delicious will be shipped to the Middle East and Africa. Some volumes will also be distributed in the Moroccan domestic market.
