Netherlands: Game improves quality of Orchids in the chain

Every grower knows that orchids cannot be transported and stored along with fruits and vegetables; the plant will age prematurely and might loose its buds. However, when looking further in the chain, many employees lack this knowledge. Therefore, a game has been develop to provide them with all the necessary knowledge. The game is called: Orchid Training and is currently available in Dutch, English and Polish. Last year, the game was released in the Netherlands and it will be launched internationally this year.

A storage facility with insufficient light, placed in a load along with eggplants or a staff member who puts the plants in a place with too much sunlight. There are numerous reasons why the quality of the orchids has decreased on arrival at the customers compared to when it left the greenhouse. Years ago, the Dutch orchid sector decided to invest in the development of knowledge in the chain. The first year, we followed and investigated different cases", says Annelies Looije of Florpartners. "Afterwards, we focused on the improvement of the knowledge in the chain."

Orchids Training
Last year, the game Orchids Training was launched in Dutch, English and Polish. The aim is to transport 100 orchids from the grower to the customer. In the game, the entire chain is simulated and different tasks need to be completed: the temperature of the transport, the warehouse, the selection of plants - and so on. So, in a fun way, you learn how to treat the plants. "The reason for the decrease in quality of the plants during transport is often caused by ignorance, not by unwillingness", says Looije.

The Orchids Training game is free of charge and can be played on every computer. "We are trying to promote the game in every stage of the chain" says Looije. At the moment, the game is being translated in Russian, German and France. "It is an easy way to improve the quality of the product."
