White phaleanopsis popular Dutch Mother's Day gift

"Our plants are already sold out for the Dutch Mother's Day. So, I am satisfied with our sales", says Arthur Zwinkels. He is the personal seller of Maarel Orchids at FloraHolland. "These weeks are important for the national market. However, we are not done yet, the next Mother's Day is already underway. At the end of the month, this day will be celebrated in France and Sweden. Also this year, the orchid is a popular gift.

Phaleanopsis
The most popular orchid variety is the large-flowered phaleanopsis. "This has been a very demanded variety for several years now." Besides that, pink flowers are also popular. Yellow flowers, however, are less popular during Mother's Day."

From retail to specialty stores
Maarel Orchids supplies the majority of their flowers to retailers. For many years, the nursery has specialized in supplying flowers to retailers. Over the last years, the company is increasingly focusing on specialty stores. "Smaller packings and heavier plants, for example", says Zwinkels. "In the past we did not supply many 'three-stems', now we are doing this more often." Zwinkels recognizes a shift from two-stems with fourteen flowers to two-stems with eighteen flowers. "The quality of these plants is higher." This line is also presented at the FloraHolland Monstergreenhouse in Naaldwijk, the Netherlands.
