SmartScan 3D live in Phalaenopsis from August

WPS recently reached an agreement with a leading orchid grower to apply innovative 3D solutions to sorting Phalaenopsis. The system is due to be launched in August. WPS SmartScan 3D provides an accurate view of orchid buds.

SmartScan 3D
Demand from the market has up to now outstripped technological capabilities, which is why WPS started looking for new technology. It was decided in collaboration with TNO to do 3D modelling of plants. After intensive practical research SmartScan 3D has already proven itself by providing a very accurate image of plant properties such as buds and flowers. In this case 3D solution is applied to orchids, but WPS has also noted considerable opportunities for identifying the properties of other types of plants.

Google, Facebook and WPS have something in common
WPS applies deep learning algorithms for reliable identification of plant properties. Deep learning algorithms can ‘learn’ new skills independently, as inspired by the functioning of the human brain. The result is that the process of learning algorithms is not subject to theoretical limitations. Google and Facebook also apply deep learning to a wide range of facets and WPS sees a lot of potential in deep learning. WPS is one of the first companies to apply deep learning algorithms to horticulture production and in plant research.

SmartScan Series: various systems from budget to state-of-the-art
The SmartScan series introduced during the IPM trade show saves on sorting costs, increases reliability, contributes to a more stable working environment and gives a better overview on the work floor with respect to the delivery of plants. The SmartScan series ranges from a simple 1D altimeter to the very precise mapping of all plant properties using 3D technology. WPS has been providing technology for reliably identifying plant properties since 2008. Every week WPS furnishes its clients with an overview of 10 million plants in order to facilitate growers in attaining high delivery reliability and in saving on sorting costs.

Camera technologies differ. There are photocells, height rulers, black-and-white cameras and colour cameras, ranging from simple to high-tech. So there is plenty of scope for customisation. Depending on your specifications and needs, we can achieve a great deal even with a limited budget.
