The construction of Cabrio greenhouses in the Netherlands is a niche market for greenhouse builders. The Cabrio greenhouse is used to allow plants to get used to the outdoor climate. Notably, there are Cabrio greenhouses in Germany, Austria and the US - greenhouses that can cover up to 50 hectares - but not in the Netherlands. Why is this so?
Arno van Deursen, General Director at Van der Valk Systems in Monster.
More expensive vs UV light
Arno van Deursen of Van der Valk Systems does not have an answer to this. Arno: "On the one hand, a Cabrio construction is naturally more expensive because heavier mechanisms must be built. The greenhouse construction is also sturdier. On the other hand, UV light reaches the plants. Nothing can beat that."
Previously outdoors
Commercial nursery Gebr. Grootscholten has a total of 3.5 hectares under glass. Of that, approximately 5,000 m2 consists of Cabrio greenhouse. John Grootscholten says he uses these for plants that were previously grown outdoors. Sometimes, these plants were damaged by the harsh winter weather. Now they are grown in the Cabrio greenhouse. Now that they have the Cabrio greenhouse, it is also used for the hardening of bedding plants. John: "Indeed I do know of enough foreign companies that have opted for a Cabrio greenhouse. This is not common in the Netherlands yet. I would not know what the reason for that is."
The Cabrio greenhouse
Plant nursery Schreurs in Sevenum also has a Cabrio greenhouse. This greenhouse is used for the growing of cabbage plants. From the start, the seed/plant is in the greenhouse. Leo van de Bekerom is the company director at the plant nursery. Leo: "We think that this is the best solution for the client. The plant is hardened from the very beginning because the windows are always open. More air simply reaches the Cabrio greenhouse. The roof is closed only when it rains. Aside from that, it is always open."
