Sunday 21 June, Father's Day

Netherlands: Are fathers expecting flowers?

It's Father's Day again on Sunday 21 June. This is, according to the website of Plantion, the day to shower a father with flowers. Naturally, the bouquet can be adapted to the desires of the father. Get father's favourite scent, drink or sweets made up into a manly bouquet. With the creativity of a florist, you can't lose and you will have a guaranteed unique present!

Richard Nixon
Actually, Father's Day came into existence following on from Mother's Day. Just like Mother's Day, the origin of Father's Day is an emotional occasion. The American Sonora Smart Dodd 'made up' Father's Day as a tribute to her father who brought up six children as a single parent. She came up with the idea one year after the introduction of Mother's Day. The first Father's Day was celebrated in 1910, but it took until 1974 for this day to be declared an official holiday by Richard Nixon.

Different dates
Father's Day is not celebrated everywhere on 21 June. In Belgium, they celebrate a week earlier and in Germany they celebrate it on Ascension Day. In Spain, Portugal and the Belgian city of Antwerp, they celebrate Father's Day on 19 March. The different dates are due to religion, such as the saint's day of Saint Joseph (father of Jesus), a day which has been celebrated on 19 March for centuries. In Scandanavia, they celebrate Father's Day on the second Sunday in November and in Thailand on 5 December, the birthday of the King.
