India: Madurai airport loses out on international cargo business

Having attained international connectivity after a long struggle, Madurai Airport now awaits clearance for international cargo lifting. Without international cargo, the local players have to depend on other airports, causing them a lot of hardship. For instance, N Jegatheesan, president of Chamber and exporter of jasmine (Madurai malli) has to take the flowers either to Trichy or to Chennai to export it to the Gulf and the United States. "It causes a lot of money waste, time delay and additional costs. If we have cargo lifting from Madurai, there will be more players like me to export things," he pointed out.
