US: New Mexico Greenhouse to employ 120 in county

Fall is upon us, but there is new life springing up at the former Aldershot Nursery on North Main Street just outside the Las Cruces city limits.

Gov. Susana Martinez, along with state and county leaders, announced support totaling $250,000 to bring New Mexico Greenhouse Holdings to the roughly 850,000-square-foot facility at 4884 S. Main St. that has been vacant for 18 months.

New Mexico Greenhouse Holdings is a partnership of Colorado Financial Holdings, a private equity financial backer, and Olson's Greenhouse Gardens, a family-owned greenhouse production company which is a commercial grower of floral bedding plants with operations in Salem, Utah and Fort Lupton, Colorado. The company primarily supplies garden bedding plants to some 400 to 500 big-box stores across the country.

While that will be the company's first effort in the new Las Cruces plant, which is going to see a $6 million investment in infrastructure and other work at the facility, they are also exploring produce production and research, in partnership with New Mexico State University, which could see berry varieties and other produce seed research conducted at the site.
