Supermarkets and florists hoping to score with Halloween

Halloween is coming up. This does not pass unnoticed in the ornamental sector, as many growers, suppliers, florists and supermarkets focus on the event. Over the last days the most exciting products could be seen - and bought - on the different auctions: many green and autumnal colored berries, ornamental fruits, physalis, halloween roses of Viproses, arrangements – with or without a spider – or even a ‘Halloween mix, Glow in the dark and Chocodreammix’ of the Dutch grower Sassen.

Dark and bright
“Dark and bright colors do well,” states gerbera grower Ruud Batist. “Particularly bright orange - the color of pumpkins - is demanded, because not many flowers and plants have this color, we are very lucky. We produce mini (germinis) in all colors, but especially for Halloween – our assortment contains a lot of orange tones and cerise."

England
In the Netherlands, Halloween isn't very popular, but the grower does a lot of business in England. “We see that supermarkets and florist throughout Western Europe are more and more trying to profit from Halloween. This is especially so in Engeland, where supermarkets usually even have a employee especially assigned to take care of the ornamental section.”

Pumpkins
The Halloween item is of course the pumpkin. The pumpkin sales are already done. Among the producers the mood is low. "In August and September it rained a lot. Half of the pumpkins were damaged."
