Battlefield Farms Virginia, USA

"32% reduction in Heuchera tissue culture loss"

Located in central Virginia, Battlefield Farms Inc. produces a diverse year-round plant production of annuals and perennials on their state-of-the-art, automated facility. Established in 1990, the Battlefield Farms operation currently includes 45 acres of covered production area and approximately 20 acres of outdoor production area.

Customer challenge
Increasing the success rates of tissue culture propagation can be a challenge for many greenhouse operations and growers, often requiring a unique strategy to properly and correctly manage factors that impact propagation and transplant success. Battlefield Farms recognized an opportunity to adjust their propagation strategy to improve their Heuchera tissue culture propagation and transplant rates and turned to Philips horticulture LEDs.

The right lighting
Marco Verdel, Battlefield Farms Head Grower Manager, learned of the successes that vegetable growers in Europe were experiencing with LEDs and began investigating LEDs as a possible solution to Battlefield Farms’ propagation challenges.

Verdel and Travis Higginbotham, worked with the Philips Horticulture LED team to set up a trial using Philips GreenPower LED production module with a light spectrum of DR / B. The results of the LED production module trial exceeded Verdel’s expectations, the grower reported.
