Zing Yeo, Waridi Farms:

Ready-made premium bouquets: a much wanted, challenging niche

Ready-made premium bouquets are challenging for growers to prepare. "They are in high demand, but it has to be done properly," says Zing of Waridi Farm, a 15 ha boutique Kenyan farm that started to supply ready-made premium bouquets, three years ago.

Fresh flowers
According to Zing, the main advantage of supplying ready-made premium bouquets is the fact that their customers receive fresher flowers. "They do not have to unpack the flowers and re-arrange them again. Our ready-made premium bouquets can be directly sold after arriving." Three years ago, Waridi Farm started supplying bouquets to European supermarkets and florist chains. During these years, the demand for these bouquets increased drastically. "Currently, we export around 20,000 bunches a week," explains Zing.

Not easy
Preparing these ready-made premium bouquets is however not easy. "It is very important that it is done properly," says Zing. "All our bouquets are hand twisted and specially packed. The bunches take up little space during transport and will not damage when they are made retail-ready," explains Zing.

Expanding markets
Waridi Farm grows around 80 varieties of roses, spray roses and clustar roses of Interplant Roses in their greenhouses in Kenya. Currently, they supply their ready-made bouquets only in Europe, but there are opportunities to expand this market and enter new countries. "As well as bouquets, we also supply straight bunches. These straight bunches are exported to around 25 countries. In Australia and Russia, for example, we see a high demand for clustar roses and our export volumes of our straight bunches to these countries is increasing. Interestingly, these flowers are often used in bouquets for weddings. Therefore, these countries will probably become a good market for our ready-made bouquets in the future."
