Sustainable and 100% compostable paperpots
Over the past few decades, most of the international industrial gardening sector has come to see the paperpot as an essential element in production. However, many producers have looked for a paperpot which is both sustainable and 100% compostable. The PlantPaper® from Sungrow in Ribe, Denmark, fulfills these requirements.
Patented Paper
PlantPaper® is an entirely new, patented type of paper which is free of fossil oils, and can be formed into a paperpot without the use of glue. The paper is pre-perforated, so that the tender plant roots can easily penetrate the holes and gain access to plenty of oxygen in the growth medium. In addition, the paper is naturally resistant to fungi. This means that no fungus coat will build up on the surface, which potentially limits the circulation of air.
Thoroughly Tested
PlantPaper® has been certified as 100 percent compostable, but it is still strong enough to be used in modern, fully automated nurseries. Both of these properties have been thoroughly tested by researchers from Aarhus University and at the test station in Aarslev, Denmark. It has also been tested by both Danish and Dutch nurseries. All of the tests have shown very convincing results.
Partnership with Modiform
Sungrow has entered into partnership with Modiform, who have developed a series of specialized trays for the new environmentally friendly paperpots. The trays are produced in the sizes requested. Both paper and trays, which can be used in the existing machines for producing paperpots, will be presented at the Modiform stand at IPM. The paper and the trays can be purchased together or individually at competitive prices at either Sungrow or Modiform. Sungrow is also launching an online service at www.plantpaper.com.
Solid Product Knowledge
The developers of the new concept are Merethe Ellegaard (daughter of the inventor of the paperpot, Øjvind Ellegaard) and Carsten Storgaard. They have both worked for Ellegaard A/S, and have a thorough knowledge of the product, as well as an in-depth understanding of the market. Together they have established the company Sungrow in Ribe, Denmark, where PlantPaper® is also produced.
