Spain: 3% increase in export of flowers and live plants up to November

The Spanish export of flowers and live plants between January and November 2015 increased by 3% compared to the same period of the previous year, totalling 272 million euros, according to the latest updated data from the Directorate General of Customs processed by FEPEX.

In the first eleven months of 2015, exports increased in all subsectors, including live plants, cut flowers, foliage and bulbs. The export of live plants totalled 227 million euros, 1% more than in the same period of 2014, of which 79.8 million euros corresponded to outdoor plants and 50.7 million euros to houseplants. The export of cut flowers grew by 10%, reaching 32 million euros (+10%); foliage stood at 9.6 million euros (+7%) and bulbs reached 3.3 million euros (+2%).

This positive development in the export of flowers and live plants, as well as the growth of the ornamental plant sector, which is the largest in Spain, have been considerably boosted by the joint participation in international fairs, such as the one held in Essen, Germany, which counted with the participation of 32 Spanish companies under the umbrella of FEPEX.

Of these 32 companies, 14 are based in the Region of Valencia, 9 in Andalusia, 4 in Catalonia, 3 in Galicia and 2 in the Canary Islands. All of them are members of the following associations integrated in FEPEX:
  • Professional Association of Flowers, Plants and Horticultural Technology of the Region of Valencia
  • Andalusian Association of Breeders and Flower Growers
  • Federation of Agricultural Producers and Breeders of Catalonia
  • Association of Breeding Entrepreneurs of the Northwest
  • Association of Harvesters and Exporters of Flowers and Live Plants of the Canary Islands
The IMP fair, in Essen, Germany, is one of the most important in Europe, counting this year with around 1,600 exhibitors from more than 45 countries and approximately 10,500 square metres of exhibition space. A total of 20 countries organise joint participations, including Spain. Participation in international fairs is one of the conditions of the agreement signed between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment and FEPEX, which aims to promote the production and quality of Spanish flowers and live plants in the international markets.
