UK: Alternative insecticide to manage aphid outbreaks, nurture biological control agents
In 2015 growers saw the usual aphid hot-spots in their flowering crops, shrubs and ornamental trees, and these were often associated with virus infections resulting from aphid transmission. The dependency on aphid parasitoids and predators at times of the year when environmental conditions are sub-optimal for their activity has often lead to unacceptable aphid population growth and crop damage. Frequent use of a limited number of aphicides has also contributed to poor control in some cases. This is often attributed to reduced aphid sensitivity following different types of adaptation within the insect pest.
“Until relatively recently, Mainman was only approved for use as a top fruit insecticide, but now that the product has obtained an ‘off-label’ extension for use in ornamentals there is an opportunity for growers in this sector to benefit from a new mode of action. Flonicamid has already demonstrated its worth against a whole range of aphids in ornamental crops in other parts of the World, and now UK growers can add this product to their armoury,” says Adrian Jackson, Ornamental Product Portfolio Manager for Belchim Crop Protection UK. Mainman can provide a useful alternative insecticide treatment to help manage aphid outbreaks more effectively and nurture and support biological control agents which may be present in the crop at the same time.”
In the UK, Mainman® can be used in protected and outside ornamental crops in accordance with Extension of Authorisation 0045/2013. A copy of this document should be read before use.
