NL: Brown rot infection leads to bankruptcy of a rose nursery in Almere

In the greenhouse area of Buitenvaart near Almere, two rose growers are affected by the brown rot bacterium, a disease caused by the bacterium Ralstonia. Since October last year, contamination was identified at 13 companies in the Netherlands. For the company Vermeulen Roses in Almere this resulted in bankruptcy. The facility of Arend Roses in Almere was also affected, but could continue after culling. The company is clean again.

The Dutch Food Safety Authority (NVWA) investigated the contamination with brown rot bacterium in rose cultivation. It is unclear how the Dutch companies were infected. The only thing that infected rose growers can do is to destroy all infected plants. Generally it concerns the whole crop of the company. Next, the greenhouse should be decontaminated. Growers are obliged to control the disease. This is done under the supervision of the NVWA.
