The history of begonia cultivation

The plant is well known, it's relatively easy to produce and one can buy it in almost any garden center worldwide. Less known, however, is its origin.



This year, 2016, has been declared 'Year of the Begonia' (amongst others) by The National Garden Bureau. With over 1700 species, it's a major product in floriculture. Professional cultivation goes back a long way: the first ornamental begonia production dates back to 1873!
