Pansy season takes off

"NL: "Hoping for a ray of sunshine"

"The lengthening of the days stirs up a cheerful sunny spring like feeling within many consumers in Europe,” says Marcel Heuterman of Wimaplant, "and at the same time the pansy season starts." At the company in Zutphen a wide variety of pansies are grown on a acreage of 10 ha. The pansies are delivered in various types of packaging, suited for different sales channels from small boutiques to large supermarket chains.

Sunshine
The season for pansies starts from week 8 until week 12. During this time the plants are to be sold off; this depends on the weather. “If in Europe spring weather is nice, selling goes fast,” says Henk Thielen, personal seller at FloraHolland, and he also provides a helping hand in marketing at Wimaplant. “As you can see in the pictures, everything is ready-for-delivery and now, it is hoped that nature will help out and on the weekends the sun may even peep out. If this is the case, people like to work on making their gardens nice.”

Colors and combinations
At Wimaplant the large flowered F1 (mildew tolerant) pansies and the small flowered Viola cornuta are grown. For years now this product range has been stable. By their own account, the most sold packaging are portable trays with pansies of one colour and also popular are 9cm pots in 6 or 18 packs.
