Rush hours for UK growers
Compared to a 'usual week', now, many more flowers need to be processed. An example is British Lamb Flowers, who grow a wide range of tulips, as well as different kinds of summer flowers such as Matthiola (Stocks) Antirrhinum, Lisianthus and Brassica. Lamb Flowers is a family company, established in 1980, and managed by Sue and Roger Lamb and their son Gareth.
In 2013, Lamb Flowers installed a Furora bunching system from Bercomex. With this machine, which grades and bunches tulips and other summer flowers quickly, they took a big leap in becoming more efficient and increasing the quality of their products. The Furora sorts stem length, stem thickness, flower volume, stem curve, maturity, number of buds, and color. Click here to read more about this project.
2 million tulips
Looking back at the last couple of busy days, Sue Lamb explains: "For both holidays, we delivered over two million tulips. Annually, we produce 15 million." The grower has 61 different varieties in their assortment.
The grower is primarily active on the national market. "Our largest customer is Waitrose, followed by Asda. We also deliver directly to florists."
