There aren't any plans for an operation abroad. "Cultivation abroad remains difficult; the flowers need light, although not too much. Effective transport is also an important factor. For these reasons, various foreign cultivation projects have failed. Internationally, the Dutch gerbera has a strong footing in the market. Should new opportunities present themselves abroad, then we will exploit these."
Mans Flowers' germini are sold at auction at five locations. More than sixty percent goes directly to the customer via FloraHolland. "A seller will be out and about all week selling and promoting gerberas. In collaboration with the exporter, we are forging a closer link with the end customer to bring new exclusive varieties to their attention. A good example of this is the Circle Collection introduced in 2015. This includes five different varieties, which have a unique appearance thanks to a striking ring around the heart of the flower." Mans Flowers grows 33 different varieties of mini-gerberas and therefore has a suitable colour for every occasion. Thanks to the size of the company (6 hectares), Mans can supply large volumes and provide assurance. 'Guaranteeing top quality' is the company motto.
For the time being, the focus remains upon optimising production at the current new plant in Bommelerwaard. "Supplying top quality flowers requires continuous investment in state-of-the-art technologies. We have been working for a number of years based on the ideas of the next way of growing and wherever possible have automated processes, including internal transport. At the time of the latest expansion, as the first gerbera operation in the Netherlands, we opted for diffuse glass. This too makes a significant contribution to the cultivation of top-quality gerberas."
