A tour through the greenhouse of Paauw Lilies

"NL: "Shorter processing time raises the quality"

The Dutch family business Paauw Lilies was founded in 1923. Today it is one of the largest producers of lilies in the Netherlands. Wim-Jan Paauw is the contact point of the company. He gives a tour through the greenhouse especially for Van der Plas.

In traditional cultivation, bulbs are planted in the greenhouse in soil. Paauw Lilies addresses the cultivation differently; their bulbs grow in containers using a mobile system. Through a large railing system each container automatically passes through the growing process in the greenhouse. A rolling container system is known to make labour savings possible and a better use of space in the greenhouse. Our aim is to increase production without making any concessions to quality.

Paauw Lilies’ main 100,000-m2 production facility is located in Rijnsburg, the Netherlands. Greenhouses cover 85,000 m2 of the facility. The lily bulbs come from the Netherlands and Chile, they are delivered frozen. After thawing for seven days, the bulbs are planted by hand and placed in containers on a railing system. The rolling container continues its way into a cold store. The bulbs take root there under strictly controlled conditions. Upon sprouting, the containers are moved to the greenhouses.

Jan-Koos: “As customers experience the quality of the product, they do not want to return to anything else.”

The whole growing process in the winter lasts 90 days and in the summer about 70 days. In former systems many employers were needed to cut lilies. Nowadays the containers roll past the employees. They can cut the lilies at an ideal working height. At the end of the process the soil is taken out of the containers and steamed. After that the whole process is repeated.

Cooperation with Van der Plas
Jan-Koos: “Van der Plas bought many lilies on the clock, but by establishing collaboration we could cut the processing time. The lilies are therefore delivered directly to Van der Plas, which helps raising the quality.”
