US: Longfield Gardens adds spring-planted bulbs to range

Cut flower growers know that dahlias, lilies and gladiolas are some of the best flowers for cutting. These spring-planted bulbs are easy to grow and produce a seemingly endless supply of blooms for casual summer arrangements.

“Home gardeners are always surprised by how easy it is to grow these spring-planted bulbs,” said Hans Langevelt, co-owner of Longfield Gardens. “This year we have added some dazzling new varieties of lilies, gladiolas and dahlias. All are outstanding cut flowers, with long stems and big, beautiful blooms.”

Here are some of the new varieties available for 2016 from Longfield Gardens:

Dahlia Crème de Cassis
This dahlia has a two-tone color harmony that sets it apart. Dark, wine-red buds open into 4 to 6" blossoms that are lavender-pink on top and wine-red below. A dark center completes the picture. Crème de Cassis grows 3 feet tall and is a good companion for flowers such as echinacea, verbena bonariensis and garden phlox.

Gladiolus Tricolore
Gladiolus 'Tricolore' features stalks that display 8 to 10 blooms with crimson red petals and a maroon and purple throat. For a continuous supply of cut flowers, plant a handful of corms every two weeks from spring through early summer.

Dahlia Penhill Watermelon
Penhill dahlias were bred in South Africa and are known around the world for their enormous flowers, beautiful colors and frilly petals. Penhill Watermelon has big, shaggy blossoms in a blend of peach, pink, lavender and yellow.

Lily Bafferari
Bafferari comes from Holland and is the result of breeding efforts to achieve stronger plants with larger flowers. Bafferari has luminous, snow-white petals that are decorated with a lemon-lime starburst. The sturdy stems stand 3 feet tall and have fat buds that open into big, 8" blooms. This lily will grow stronger and taller each year.

Dahlia Soft Orange Mix
This custom mix includes three different types of dahlias, each with its own look, with warm gold and orange colors
