Gerbera benefits from diffuse coating

Gerbera likes plenty of light, but they do not like very high temperatures. These plant requirements can be met by using a coating with a high haze factor and temperature reduction, such as Optifuse IR or TransPAR.

Gerbera has a thick canopy of leaves that cast a shadow over each other. Light which beams directly down on the plant cannot penetrate as well as light that is reflected from all sides, which is the case with diffuse light. Better light penetration ensures improved assimilation of the leaves, which leads to more sugars in the plant and better production. A diffuse coating also prevents the appearance of sharp light spots. These spots cause local stress, which adversely affects the photosynthesis.

Optifuse IR or TransPAR?
Optifuse IR and TransPAR both generate diffuse light. Transpar is the best choice for low greenhouses and varieties that do not tolerate heat too well because this coating offers better protection from light and heat. In a newer greenhouse in combination with screening and stronger varieties, Optifuse IR is the preferred coating because it offers better use of the natural light. The high light transmission combined with diffusion as well as thermal insulation provide an ideal greenhouse climate.

Stomata open longer
In a greenhouse with diffuse light, the climate is more stable and the crop temperature lower. This ensures that the crop remains active for much longer periods on days with high levels of radiation. The stomata remain open longer, resulting in continuation of the photosynthesis and better evaporation of the crop. Altogether, this ensures improved production and quality.

In some varieties, overheating could be catastrophic to flower colouring. The coatings, in combination with screening in the event of excessive radiation, thus ensure a better flower quality.

The application of a heat reflecting coating requires a different method of cultivation. Heating of the crop is somewhat slower in the morning, and the grower should take this into account. On the other hand, there are advantages to be gained as described above.
