Ecuadorian flower industry to support earthquake victims

Yesterday, on April 20, the Ecuadorian coastline was hit again by a earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale. The first quake was on April 16 with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale. The flower sector, which is mainly located in the highlands, has not suffered any direct damages, they are still exporting to their clients. However, coastal areas have been destroyed and the growers are offering help.

In order to contribute to the recovery of this area growers are setting up campaigns. Expoflores, the Association of producers and exporters in Ecuador, for example, is organizing an Earthquake campaign: "One day for them". The aim of this campaign is to provide the affected communities with reasonably comfortable areas protected from rain, extreme sunlight and bugs. They are going to build greenhouses with UV lightning for shelters and medical centers. Besides that, they also want to build water purification pools and offer the communities medicines, if the budget is sufficient. Also grower Royal Flowers is running a campaign to collect donations to buy special tents which can sleep 10 people. "We’re starting by sending 15 tents, easy-to-open canned food and energy bars. These sturdy tents sleep 10 people and are built to last a year or more. Each costs $494.50 + shipping and include the tent, floor tarp and 4 net doors for mosquito protection and ventilation. Our customers and staff are pitching in to volunteer and help buy pallets and containers of food and water," say Royal Flowers on their facebook page.
