Better year
According to Johansen, this campanula season is better than last year's season. "Last year, we had a bad year. The market was flooded with campanulas, which caused a drop in prices. This year, however, the growers here in Scandinavia decided to produces less campanulas, in order to fit the demand. Due to some warm days in Holland last week, their production came too early. So, there is no oversupply at the moment and the production fits the demand. This, in turn, results in better prices, actually the prices we expected, which are about 5% higher compared to last year," she says.

Weather influence
In general, it has been a cold spring in Europe. Fortunately, these low temperatures are not influencing the crop growth of campanulas. However, higher temperatures do. The growers experienced some warm days last week. Therefore, their campanula crop finished faster or even too fast. ''But we kept on track on our production schedule," says Johansen.

Varieties
From week 1 to week 40, Gartneriet Thoruplund produces campanulas in their 56,000 m2 greenhouse in Denmark. "Half of the year, the greenhouse is filled with campanulas and the other half with schlumbergeras," says Johansen. Currently, three colors from their own breeding are being produced; the White Ocean, Blue Ocean and Deep Blue Ocean. The White Ocean is their latest introduction. They started to breed and produce this color in order to meet the demand of their customers. "Currently, the Blue and Deep Blue Ocean are still the most popular varieties," she says.
