India: Gerbera flowers bloom in Kalaburagi

Syed Riajuddin Bhutto has successfully cultivated gerbera, all over the 20 guntas of land he owns on the outskirts of Kalaburagi. It's not his success alone. Bhutto has taken the help of the government, which has subsidized his cultivation costs by 50%. Now, Bhutto earns Rs. 50,000 every month after deducting all expenses.

A single gerebera flower sells for around Rs. 8-10 during the off-season. During the wedding season, a single flower can sell for up to Rs 15. Bhutto brought in red soil from Kamalapur village to grow his Gerbera crop in consultation with horticulture department officers.

He prepared beds of 30cm height, and 1 to 1.5 metre width, across 10 guntas.

"Cultivating in pots is better than cultivating on beds as there are fewer chances of pests attack and diseases. I brought red-coloured Ruby, yellow-coloured Supernova, orange Rosalins as well as pink and white flowers in the form of 1,350 seeds from Pune," says Bhutto.
