"Most US gardeners intimidated by gardening"

Star Roses and Plants is sharing survey results that reveal almost seven in ten (68%) adults in the United States have a garden, but 87 percent of those gardeners find something intimidating about planting or gardening. However, despite the intimidation factor, nearly six out of ten (57%) gardeners share they are also inspired to plant or garden because they enjoy it.

The survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of Star Roses and Plants, from April 22-26, 2016, among men and women 18+ years of age. Key highlights from the survey include:
  • Nearly nine out of ten gardeners are intimidated about planting or gardening: Roughly a quarter (27%) of gardeners say that ongoing maintenance prohibits them from gardening, while one fifth (20%) claim keeping their plants alive is another barrier.
  • Almost half of gardeners prefer to garden with their spouse/partner/significant other: 47 percent garden with their spouse, partner or significant other. Additionally, 31 percent of U.S. adults maintain their garden by themselves.
  • Garden acts as curb appeal & food source: 46 percent of gardeners say the reason they plant or garden is to improve the look of their home (50% among homeowners), while 45 percent of gardeners are inspired to plant or garden because of a desire to grow their own food.
  • Tips from social media: Almost one in five of all Americans (18%) get tips online from either Pinterest, Facebook, and/or DIY web sites.
This is the first year that Star Roses and Plants has commissioned a survey among the general population examining the perspectives of both men and women of a variety of ages in terms of how they maintain their garden, who they garden with, what is most intimidating about planting and gardening, and what inspires them to plant or garden.

“Gardening is a great way to express your style and can also offer tremendous reward,” said Steve Hutton, President of Star Roses and Plants and third-generation nurseryman. “Gardening does not have to be challenging. If you choose easy plants and use the right products, you can create a beautiful garden of any size, shape and style. Gardening should be something that you feel inspired to do and that inspires you back.”
