US: Growers gearing up for the next season
Mr. Hecklinger said his 113-year-old business is one of the longest running in the area. On his 17 acres is a 7.25-acre greenhouse, where he grows bedding plants, hanging baskets, vegetable plants, and 4, 6, 8, and even up to 10-inch potted plants — annuals that are mostly sold wholesale to independent garden centers.
There’s always something growing at greenhouses, and the operators work long hours.
“We work from December until now, seven days a week,” said Mr. Hecklinger, who has between 20 and 22 people working at Hecklinger’s in the peak season, from about April through at least May. In the off season, there are five employees. “I don’t get a day off until the end of June.”
Greenhouses benefit residents by providing aesthetic beauty and enjoyment.
