Alaskan growers provide peonies in August

Rachel Christy, the owner of Alaska Blooms Peony Farm describes a variety called Mother's Choice as blush, never pink.

"Pink's too strong of a word, it's blush," Christy said.

For several years peonies have been popular with brides across the country, and, in Alaska during the summer, you can usually expect to find vases over stuffed with the flower that grows easily there.

"It's all market timing in Alaska," Christy said. "We're coming on in July when all the other peony areas have bloomed out. The Pacific Northwest has bloomed out. Vermont, New England have bloomed out. Minnesota, Wisconsin they're done. With peonies you can cut these and hold them for six weeks so we're going to have peonies into the middle of August."
