"We have an open mindset to test new technology like grafting and other things", explained Dolors Gelpi of HGS. Inside their 1,8 hectare greenhouse operation, they have installed a new seeder line and fully WiFi controllable irrigation booms, as well as several interesting heating and cooling installations.

"We teamed up with several Israeli, Italian and local Spanish suppliers of technology to realize our new project. We now use a huge biomass boiler system that burns wood chips that are made of waste material from the Catalan forests in order to prevent wildfires. This makes the heating of the nursery very efficient and sustainable."

Conic system installed a new seeder line in order to enable the nursery to keep up with the demand for more diverse customer demands. "We now export nearly 50% of our grafted seedlings all over Europe, mainly for hobby markets. That market is growing every year. The customers require different trays in small orders and we need to change the trays and seeds quite often. For this reason we have chosen to install a Conic seeder that can be adjusted to any tray size and dimension very quickly and easily.''

After germination, the trays are propagated further inside the greenhouse. "In here we have installed new Conic irrigation booms too", explained Dolors. "The head growers can control the booms and irrigation strategies from a mobile device very easily. The booms are in connection with the Android OS app and connected to the servers by the RF300Wifi system from Conic. Thanks to this, all of the irrigation strategies can be controlled within the Conic software, wherever you are. We also upgraded our old irrigation booms with the RF300Wifi system. This made the irrigation way more efficient, we use less water and the staff needs less time to complete the job.''
Hishtil Gelpi is located south of Blanes. According to Dolors, the employees often enjoy a swim during their lunch break. "They come back to work completely energized after a cool dive in the ocean."
