US: Grower cultivates millions of tulips in hydroponic greenhouse

More than 10 years after patenting a way to hydroponically grow flowers, Bloomaker USA Inc. now imports several million flower bulbs every year from Holland and Ecuador to sell throughout the United States. Before the flowers are distributed, the bulbs are brought to Waynesboro to take root.

The Dutch-owned company, housed in a giant greenhouse and warehouse off U.S. 340 in Waynesboro, makes almost its entire profit during holiday season of December through Mother’s Day in May.

Right now, Bloomaker is only growing different varieties of tulips, with bulbs imported yearly from Holland, and giant red amaryllis imported from a farm in Ecuador. Bloomaker markets itself as the world's first hydroponic flower, and sells its products throughout the United States.
